Advancing Secure and Intelligent Railway Systems with SYSGO

Transforming Railway Safety and intelligence: Suzeck integrates cutting-edge AI with secure, real-time operating systems to enable next-generation Railway automation. The overall goal is Safety-certified, cyber-resilient solutions for the future of mobility.

What is the Suzeck Project?

The Suzeck project (Secure, Safe, Authorized & Certifiable Edge & Cloud Key Components), lead by SYSGO and Deutsche Bahn, addresses networking Safety-critical systems in the Railway sector - such as signal processing in Rail networks or data processing in trains. These systems require a highly secure and reliable digital infrastructure, which is why intelligent connectivity platforms, like Cloud services, play a crucial role in ensuring safe and efficient operations.

The implementation is done by developing a Safe Computing Platform (SCP) - a secure framework designed to protect and manage critical Railway applications. A key feature of this project is the creation of a platform-independent application programming interface (PI API). This API acts as a protective bridge between essential rail operations and cloud or edge-based applications, ensuring that Safety-critical data remains secure while allowing for greater flexibility in using different technology providers. By introducing this Safety layer, Suzeck enables seamless integration of applications from various sources, making it easier to transfer and operate software across different systems. The Safe Computing Platform is built on an open-source reference model, ensuring transparency and adaptability while also allowing for proprietary modifications to meet specific Safety requirements.

The project follows the SCP PI standard, which was developed in collaboration with European Railway operators from Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. This shared standard ensures cross-border compatibility and strengthens the overall Security and efficiency of digital Rail systems across Europe.

SYSGO's Role in Suzeck

SYSGO brings its expertise in real-time operating systems (RTOS) and Security-certified software solutions to the project's ecosystem. SYSGO's part with Suzeck lies in the following objectives:

  • Develop and combine the necessary components to create a flexible and secure computing platform that can be used in systems where Safety is essential.
  • Create a prototype for software that connects different parts of cloud-based applications, ensuring they meet Safety standards across multiple systems. This will include an open-source version that can be packaged and run in containers for easy use and distribution.

The company's flagship product, PikeOS, serves as a foundational technology for:

  • Secure Virtualization – Enabling safe and deterministic execution of AI-driven Railway applications.
  • Safety-certified Environments – Ensuring compliance with SIL 4 Safety requirements through modular, high-assurance architectures.
  • Seamless Integration with AI & Sensor Systems – Providing the necessary infrastructure for real-time AI inference and Railway perception systems.

The project will use a range of advanced technologies to improve communication and coordination between systems. This includes Time-Sensitive Networks (TSN), which ensure that data is delivered on time and without delays. It will also use Data Distribution Service (DDS) to efficiently share information between different parts of the system.

Kubernetes, a tool for managing and organizing applications, will be used to coordinate different components and ensure smooth operations, including decision-making through voting mechanisms.

Additionally, the project will incorporate OCORA PI, which stands for Open Command, Control, and Signalling On-board Reference Architecture, to help standardize and improve how on-board train systems communicate and operate.
