Space Tech Expo Europe 2024 in Bremen was an unforgettable event, gathering the brightest minds and groundbreaking innovations from across the space industry. As Europe’s premier B2B space technology event, it lived up to its promise, hosting over 8,000 attendees and showcasing an impressive 700+ exhibitors, including SYSGO and our valued partners. From engaging discussions to live demonstrations, the expo was an inspiring opportunity to witness firsthand the technologies that will shape the future of space exploration and satellite systems.
The Pulse of Innovation: SYSGO at Space Tech Expo
Space industry leaders and emerging players alike converged to exchange insights, establish new connections, and forge partnerships. We are proud that our products were well positioned at multiple locations throughout the venue, reflecting our commitment to safety and security-critical solutions in space. Our booth was excited to welcome so many attendees to explore our latest advancements, discussed their projects, and learned how our technology can empower their missions. We had numerous fruitful conversations with industry experts and engaged in forward-looking discussions about trends, challenges, and opportunities in space computing and AI.
Spotlight on SYSGO's Cutting-Edge Demonstrators
At the heart of SYSGO’s exhibit was our Edge AI Inference Engine, a compelling demo that showcased on-board data processing capabilities using radiation-tolerant architecture. The system, based on a 16-core Cortex®-A72 with our certifiable PikeOS Hypervisor, ran three concurrent AI models: Asteroid Pose Determination, Lunar Hazard Detection, and Ship Detection. Each model demonstrated how real-time AI can enhance mission-critical decision-making while operating in harsh space environments.
The highlight was the integration of SYSGO's PikeOS Hypervisor, engineered for ECSS Cat. A safety standards and EAL5+ security. This ensures time and space partitioning for applications of varying criticality, providing a robust solution for space platforms like the Teledyne e2V LX2160. The demo not only underscored our commitment to safety and security but also showcased the flexibility and performance of our system for diverse space use cases.
Integration with MathWorks®: Bridging Simulation and Deployment
A key highlight of our participation was showcasing the seamless integration of MathWorks® tools—System Composer™ and Simulink®—with SYSGO’s PikeOS platform. Developed with MathWorks and in cooperation with DLR (Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, German Aerospace Center), this integration provides a streamlined ARINC 653-compliant workflow, enabling users to design, simulate, and deploy applications with precision and efficiency. The collaboration leverages MathWorks’ advanced modeling environment to automatically generate Simulink models with ARINC 653 interfaces derived from configuration XML files. Moreover, a model can be directly compiled as a PikeOS application, with the configuration XML used directly for integration purposes. PikeOS further enhances this process by enabling users to specify architectures, integrate necessary resources, and build secure and certifiable systems. This integration highlights the synergy between SYSGO and MathWorks, setting a new standard for modularity, safety, and scalability in aerospace and avionics system development.
Advancing Space Safety with the GR740-MINI Platform
One of our collaborations this year was with Frontgrade Gaisler, a world-renowned provider of embedded computing solutions for space. We proudly presented the integration of PikeOS on the GR740-MINI evaluation board, a powerful combination that brings new levels of safety and security to space-grade computing. The GR740, a fault-tolerant, quad-core LEON4 SPARC V8 processor, is essential for high-reliability missions and satellite constellations. With our joint efforts, we’ve set a new standard in space safety and efficiency.
The GR740-MINI platform, with PikeOS, offers advanced support for both SMP (symmetric multi-processing) and AMP (asymmetric multi-processing) architectures, mixed-criticality applications, and rigorous safety certification standards aligned with ESA requirements. Visitors were excited to see how this compact yet powerful evaluation board could accelerate their developments for Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) and New Space missions.
Shaping the Future of Space AI: The SYSGO & Klepsydra Partnership
The expo also marked an important milestone in our strategic partnership with Klepsydra, an AI software specialist for Edge Computing. Together, we’re bringing AI innovation to the forefront of avionics and space-embedded markets. By integrating Klepsydra AI’s efficient inference engine into our PikeOS platform, we’re enabling space missions to leverage real-time data processing and enhanced decision-making capabilities.
Our collaboration with Klepsydra is already bearing fruit, as demonstrated in projects like REBECCA, supported by the Chips Joint Undertaking and the European Union. The AI inference engine, optimized for RISC-V architectures, delivers exceptional performance gains and is poised to revolutionize on-board AI applications, from earth observation to space exploration.
A Platform for Growth and Collaboration
Attending Space Tech Expo Europe 2024 wasn’t just about showcasing our technology; it was about being part of a larger conversation... to boldly go where no one was before. The event underscored the importance of collaboration in driving space innovation. Our meetings with partners, customers, and industry pioneers were rich with insights, opening doors to future projects and collaborations. We are excited to apply these learnings and build even stronger solutions that meet the evolving demands of the space industry.
